On July 15, 2026, Kenichi Nagasawa, Senior Advisor to Takaoka IP, participated as a panelist in the international symposium “Standard Essential Patents (SEP) and Mediation: Symposium on Recent Developments in International Intellectual Property Law.” The symposium was co-hosted by SEP Expert Group Japan and Keio University IP Forum and was held at Keio University’s Mita Campus in Tokyo.
Disputes involving standard-essential patents have become increasingly complex as standardized technologies have expanded beyond the telecommunications sector into areas such as automobiles, the Internet of Things (IoT), connected devices, and artificial intelligence. Against this background, mediation and arbitration are attracting growing international attention as alternative means of resolving SEP disputes.
The symposium brought together experts from Europe, Japan, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and China to discuss recent developments in SEP mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
Mr. Nagasawa joined a panel discussion examining the potential of mediation as a practical tool for resolving SEP disputes. Together with other legal and corporate IP professionals, the panel considered both the possibilities and the challenges involved in the effective use of mediation.
Drawing on his extensive experience in corporate intellectual property management and international IP matters, Mr. Nagasawa continues to contribute actively to discussions on important developments in the global intellectual property community.
