Tokyo Hotel Selection Basics
When visiting Japan for AIPPI 2025 in Yokohama, many attendees also plan to spend time in Tokyo either before or after the congress. Choosing a hotel in Tokyo can be surprisingly challenging — even Japanese travelers sometimes struggle to decide. For patent attorneys and IP professionals, selecting the right area is especially tricky, given the need for convenient access to meetings and clients.
Hotels in Tokyo are generally concentrated in four major areas:
- Tokyo Station / Marunouchi / Nihonbashi area
- Shinagawa area
- Shinjuku / Shibuya / Ikebukuro area
- Roppongi / Akasaka area
While it is generally best to stay close to your main meeting destinations, Tokyo’s excellent transportation system makes most areas convenient. Therefore, if a particular area appeals to you, feel free to choose it without worry.
If We Were Visitors — Our Personal Recommendations
As a Tokyo-based IP firm, we are often asked where we would stay if we were visitors coming for AIPPI in Yokohama. Here are our personal (and subjective) recommendations, which we hope will help you plan your stay.
Shimbashi
One of our top recommendations is Shimbashi. This area belongs to the broader Tokyo Station / Marunouchi / Nihonbashi district. While hotels near Tokyo Station tend to be high-end, Shimbashi offers a wide range of options, from budget-friendly to luxury.
Tokyo Station itself is massive and can take a long time to navigate, whereas Shimbashi Station is compact and easy to use — ideal for busy schedules. Additionally, Shimbashi is full of restaurants and bars, making it a lively area to explore after meetings. For those with multiple meetings across the city, it offers an excellent balance of convenience and character.
Another advantage is its direct connection to Yokohama via the Tokaido Line — just two stops from Tokyo Station, making it very accessible.
Compared to the Tokyo Station area, Shimbashi may feel slightly less luxurious and less international, and it might seem more “local” to visitors unfamiliar with Tokyo.
Tokyo Station Area
For those who feel a bit unsure about staying in Shimbashi due to its lower international profile, hotels around Tokyo Station are a very safe and comfortable choice.
This area is filled with towering skyscrapers, offering a futuristic and ultra-clean atmosphere that feels both secure and sophisticated. It is a district where you can truly experience the modern side of Tokyo, with easy access to major transportation hubs and business centers.
However, it is worth noting that most hotels in this area are high-end, catering to business executives and international travelers seeking luxury and top-notch service.
Shinagawa
Our third recommendation is Shinagawa. This station is a major hub with Shinkansen access, making it perfect for those planning business trips to Osaka, Nagoya, or other regions. It is also close to Haneda Airport, which is convenient for international travelers.
The area around Shinagawa Station is highly practical and business-focused, with several high-end hotels that cater to international visitors. However, it lacks major sightseeing spots or lively neighborhoods, so it may feel rather quiet and straightforward.
If your priority is efficient travel — especially if you have meetings outside Tokyo or need easy airport access — Shinagawa is an excellent choice. But if you want to enjoy more of Tokyo’s urban culture and vibrant atmosphere, you may prefer other areas.
Shinjuku / Ikebukuro / Shibuya Area
This area ranks lower on our list this time since it is farther from Yokohama. Nevertheless, it offers an unparalleled chance to experience Tokyo’s famous urban “chaos.”
Here, countless small bars and eateries glow with neon lights, and narrow backstreets weave together to create a vibrant entertainment district. Just walking around can give you a strong sense of Tokyo’s unique energy. Despite the hustle and bustle, these areas remain very safe. However, if someone approaches you on the street, we recommend simply pretending not to understand and moving on.
Beyond the nightlife, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro together represent the heart of Tokyo’s vibrant urban energy. These neighborhoods offer an unmatched mix of entertainment, shopping, and dining experiences that capture the true spirit of the city. Visitors can enjoy everything from large department stores and stylish boutiques to cozy local eateries and lively street scenes.
This dynamic blend of traditional and modern, local and global, makes these districts an exciting base for those who want to truly feel the pulse of Tokyo. While they may not be the most convenient options for traveling back and forth to Yokohama, they provide a memorable experience for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Tokyo’s everyday life and dynamic atmosphere.
Roppongi / Akasaka Area
This area is known for its upscale, international atmosphere. With many foreign companies and embassies, it feels more cosmopolitan and foreigner-friendly.
The area has many luxury hotels, offering a high-end, sophisticated stay. One thing to note is that there are no nearby JR stations, so you will mainly rely on the subway to get around.
Interestingly, the Japan Patent Office is located roughly in the middle of the Roppongi, Akasaka, and Shimbashi areas, making it accessible from all three locations.
Summary
Tokyo is vast and diverse. While choosing a hotel can feel daunting, it can also be an exciting opportunity to explore different sides of the city. If a certain area intrigues you, we encourage you to embrace that choice and enjoy what it has to offer.
Thanks to Tokyo’s excellent public transport, no matter where you stay, you will still be able to attend your meetings and explore the city without major inconvenience. Enjoy your stay and make it a memorable part of your AIPPI 2025 experience!
